Katerina Canyon is an Award Winning Poet, Best Selling Author, civil rights activist, and essayist. Her new poetry collection ‘Surviving Home’ will be released in November 2021, published by Kelsay Books. Surviving Home is a reflection of African American heritage and upbringing, racism, and abuse. Concisely arresting and challenging the beliefs of family and the fantasies of tradition, the poems in Surviving Home show that home is a place that you endure rather than a place where you are nurtured. With unyielding cadence and unparalleled sadness and warmth, Katerina Canyon contemplates the prejudice and limitations buried in a person’s African American heritage: parents that seem to care for you with one hand and slap you with the other, the secret desires to be released from the daily burdens of life, as well as the surprising ways a child chooses to amuse herself. Finding resilience in the unexpected, this collection tears down the delicate facades of family.

It has been three months since Benita Renee Jenkins completed her first assignment for a secret organization called DTCU, the Domestic Terrorism Crime Unit. When Agent Jenkins meets young boxer Doug Gibson at a local gym in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, her sixth sense kicks in. Benita soon discovers that Doug’s grandmother has been kidnapped by a local gang, and if he ever wants to see her alive again, he must participate in an illegal underground fighting club to pay off a gambling debt owed by his brother Sean. When Agent Miguel Perkins, her boss and lover, warns her to stay clear of any situations not sanctioned by the DTCU, she goes against his command and stops at nothing to solve this case. She will get to the truth, even if it means putting herself and fellow agent Evan Green in the direct line of danger.
