A computer won’t make you become a great writer. But it can certainly help you along the way. How could it not? The mighty combination of pen and paper helped many writers find their voice, and a computer is a much more powerful tool than those charming yet primitive items. However, it’s important to remember that while a computer can help you to improve your writing, that’ll only happen if you have a computer that works for you. If you don’t, then you might find that the opposite is true; your computer hinders your writing.
In this blog, we’re going to look at some tried and tested computer tips that’ll put you on the right path towards writing well.

Physically Clean
You could write a novel if you were living in a dirty, disheveled home. But to do so, you’d probably need to be pretty motivated. We all know how much nicer and easier it is to write when we’re in a clean and spacious environment. The same principle applies to your computer, too. If your laptop is looking a little gross, then you might be less eager to spend hours typing away. Use a protective case and, every now and again, spend some time deep cleaning the device — aside from the other benefits, you’ll also make your laptop cleaner. Your keyboard might be grosser than you think!
Self-Control
There are many great writers out there. It’s just that not every writer has the discipline to sit down and actually write their novel. It’s hard enough to find motivation in any capacity, but when you’re trying to work on a device that is a bona fide entertainment wizard, then it becomes more difficult. If you find that you can’t master the self-control that you need to stay away from Facebook et al., look at installing software that’ll block you from those sites. Another idea is to unplug from the internet while you’re writing.
Moving Fast
You’ll be hoping to hit flow state when you’re writing. This is when you feel like you’re one with the computer, and all the thoughts and words are just flowing out of you. It’s a blessed moment that you’ll try to reach again and again. One thing that can prevent flow state from occurring or can cut it short is when your computer is running slowly. Is it freezing all the time? Then you’ll only end up getting annoyed. The good news is that there’s nearly always something you can do that’ll speed things up. For example, you could look at your computer’s storage. If it’s nearly full, then, of course, it’ll run slow. Bigger issues might require the help of a professional.
Comfortable Writing
Finally, take a look at your computer setup. It’s worthwhile investing in an ergonomic keyboard and mouse. They’re designed so that you don’t put too much strain on your wrists and fingers. A Bluetooth keyboard and laptop stand is also recommended since this will encourage correct posture. It’s easier to write when you’re comfortable!
