Welcome to the first annual Black History Month Hop hosted by Reflections of a Bookaholic and Mocha Girls Read a month long blogging event which focuses on giving black authors, books, and those who support them a month in the spotlight.

This is the week of LOVE♥♥!  Black Love! (and all the craziness that encircles it)  This week we will be featuring black romance novels and the authors that write them.

Welcome Monda Webb

Monda Raquel Webb is author, publisher, marketing expert, and experienced producer. After graduating from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, Monda began her production career as a traffic coordinator for City Cable 16, a government municipal channel in Washington, DC.  She quickly climbed the ranks and served in all aspects of production, from grip, to production assistant, to producer to on-air talent even hosting her own on-air entertainment show, One on One with Monda Webb. As producer, she won awards from the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) for Production in several different categories, including:  1st Place Talking Heads:  FYI: Your government at Work, 3rd Place Documentary:  The 1993 March on Washington, Honorable mention: The Civil War Memorial Project. A featured realtor on several episodes of HGTV’s Get it Sold and Designed to Sell, Monda also worked as a production assistant and extra on the film Born Yesterday, filmed in Washington, DC.

Currently Monda combines producing, writing, performing and publishing under her consulting company, Monda Media, LLC  where she pursues her passion for the written word, spoken word, social media, television, and film under one umbrella. The publishing arm of Monda Media has published four books and manages author brand, public relations, and marketing/sales of product and ancillary items. Future projects include a book of short stories; Red Clay Dirt and Mountains (May 2011) two speculative fiction novels entitled BoneHeart (2013) and The Pretenders (2014). She performs her poetry nationwide at select venues, including The Congressional Black Caucus, The Harlem Book Fair and The National Book Club Conference and Women’s Events.Monda‘s latest project involves working as a writer/producer for 7:33 am the Movie, an independent full-length feature film adapted from her novel by director Aimee Dixon – Join the FB Fan Page and journey with Monda behind the scenes as she transitions from novelist to indie film maker.

MGR:  Thank you so much Monda for stopping by and taking a minute to chat with us.  Tell us about your book.
MW:  7:33 am is a love story. Between a guy, his girl…and his girl. Man-sharing in Washington, DC, shaken and stirred! lol.
MGR:  What was the inspiration for this book?
MW:  I was in the best relationship of my life, with a tailor made boyfriend, when there was a knock on the door at 7:33 am. That knock rocked my world. It was his other girlfriend.
MGR:  Say what!!!!  OOHHH NNOO!!!  Wheww!  I need to take a minute.  OK OK!  What are you working on now? Can we get a sneak peak?
MW:  I’m working on a book of short stories entitled “Red Clay Dirt and Mountains” due out this spring. The book demonstrates the resilience of the human spirit over adversity. The overall theme is to “know who you are, and whose you are, for it determines the course of your destiny.”
MGR: What are you reading now?
MW:  Blood Colony by Tananarive Due
MGR:  Call me when you finish it.  I read it and I would love to know what you think.  Who are some of your favorite authors?
MW:  Zora Neale Hurston, J California Cooper, Alice Walker, Octavia Butler, James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Ann Petry, Dorothy West, Tananarive Due, Steven Van Patten
MGR: How did your family react to your title of published author?
MW:  They kind of took it in stride. I know they’re proud of me though.
MGR:  What advice do you have for black indie authors?
MW:  Do your research. Write what you know. Get your work professionally edited. Write as often as possible. Daily if you can.
MGR:  Monda, if you had to do this all over again, what would you have done differently?
MW:  I would have learned the business better. Creativity is one thing. But a blend of both is priceless.
MGR:  As you know, it’s February and that means Black History Month in the US.  What does Black History Month mean to you?
MW:  A reminder
MGR:  What do you do for fun?
MW:  Read. Write. Travel. Going to the movies.
MGR: What’s your guilty pleasure?
MW:  White carbs. lol.
MGR:  LOL!!!  You and me both.  What is your favorite line from a book?
MW:  “Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board”
MGR:  What did you want to be when you were a kid?
MW:  When I was a kid I wanted to be an actress
MGR: What do you see for yourself in 5 years?
MW:  5 years from now I want my novel, 7:33 am to have become a motion picture. I want my short stories to get optioned and sold, and to be able to make a living writing and creating.
MGR:  That is soo going to happen for you.  You are on the path.  Any pet peeves?
MW:  Bad drivers
MGR:  What book do you wish you had written?
MW:  I wish I had written….”Their Eyes were Watching God”
