If you love reading, why not inspire others to take it up, even from a young age? Getting kids into reading early can be very beneficial. It will help them develop certain skills and cognitive functions and they’ll learn valuable vocabulary. It’s also a great way to engage their curiosity and imagination and summer is the perfect time to do it. Motivate them to read a book for a quiet break while hanging out by the pool or beach. Reading can also be the best distraction on a long journey. Here are five fun ways to get kids reading.
Start a book club
You could make reading cool by adding a social aspect. Start a kids’ book club and get them to invite their best friends. This will give them a little incentive to finish the book as they’ll have a deadline and want to impress their peers. You could make it into a little party and offer snacks and drinks or even book-related games and prizes. Rotate which parents host the club so one family isn’t always stuck with the planning. Here are a few more tips on how to start a kids’ book club.
Find a great series
The best way to get kids into reading is to get them hooked on a great series. Research what’s hot at the moment according to your kid’s age and interests. Get them the first book of the most popular series as a gift and hopefully, they’ll look forward to reading the next. If your child is reading a book they’re not interested in, unless it’s for school, don’t worry. You can always change it to something more appropriate.
Get them personalized stuff
You could offer them a little incentive to get back into reading and studying after summer vacation with some logoed school supplies. Personalized items will make it much more fun. If you run your own business you could even get your company branded printed on these items. This will help increase your exposure and you can even offer them out as kids’ party favors.
Make reading part of your daily routine
Lead by example and make reading a part of your daily self-care ritual. You could encourage reading time before bed or dinner together. You can then reward your child for reading by watching a movie or playing a game as a family. Find a way to introduce reading into your daily routine as a fun way to unwind.
Look for competitions online
A little healthy competition can be very enticing so you could look up book-related contests online. National Geographic Kids has great giveaways and competitions, for example, and they always have some fantastic interactive and educational reading material. You could even organize your own reading contests as a family. Race your kids to finish the latest for book club and offer a small prize or reward. Find your own way to make reading fun for kids and get them excited about it from a young age.
